I started Chase Charters to offer fishing charters in the Gulf of Maine for ground fish like cod and haddock but really so we could fish for giant Bluefin Tuna. The picture on the home page has me on the left and Bob "Crank" Alessi on the right of a 585 lb tuna.
During this time I got sick of tripping over the safety lines we used to secure the expensive fishing rods and after many tries came up with a coiled wire safety leash. It stays up under the gunwhale when not in use and stretches out to 5ft when needed. It's called the Rod-On, a name thought up by my long time fishing buddy Whitey.
A number of fisherman asked me to make some for them and I decided to try to sell them. My sales approach was to sell only wholesale to tackle stores and not to the big box stores and that approach has seemed to work as we now have tackle stores in most coastal states from Maine to Miami.
Last year I sold my house and beloved tuna boat, The Chase, and moved to SW Florida. I bought a flats boat and am going to trade in tuna for tarpon.
I miss my friends, although many have found their way down here, and I plan on going back up for some tuna fishing in the fall...but I do not miss the cold weather and shoveling snow!
If you are ever near Charlotte Harbor give me a call and maybe we can wet line.
